Every time Loki shows up on my dash I think of the Lone Power

which I guess makes sense…

Since in the Young Wizards mythos Loki would be the Lone Power? (Well, the Lone Power would be Loki I think that phrasing makes more sense…)

I know DD recently said that she would fancast Benedict Cumberbatch as the Lone One (and I agree he’d be great for it), but after watching Thor and Avengers, I gotta say that NO ONE could do the Lone One’s redemption scene at the end of High Wizardry as well as Tom Hiddleston. NO ONE.

Well, the fact that Tom pulled that wonderful business off is precisely why — with regret — I wouldn’t cast him. He’s done it once, and actors are typically (and maybe wisely) reluctant to allow themselves to be cast repeatedly doing the same riff; that way lies typecasting. And Hiddleston has now sunk himself so perfectly into the Loki role in my head that I doubt I could see him as the LP, because they’re just that bit too close. If that makes sense.

(Just as a side issue: Loki isn’t identical to the Lone Power, who is native to a far more [in YW terms] central reality; though he could possibly be considered one of the LP’s avatars. The description of Asgard in the films makes it plain that while Asgardians are extremely powerful denizens of another reality, and sometimes mistaken for gods, they are nonetheless not, in the theological sense, truly divine. Hence they’re way below the level of existence “native” to the Powers that Be. …Whether Loki actually is an avatar would be debatable. One way or the other, I suspect he’d actively reject the very idea. “I do what I want!” — that’s the line, isn’t it? But if Loki was an avatar, the only response he’d get to that sentiment from deeper in reality would be a rather nasty chuckle, and the suggestion, “Yeah, you just go right on thinking that.”)

Anyway: my feeling, when YW does start heading for the screen, would be that it’d be amazing to see what Cumberbatch could bring to the part. Naturally the writer doesn’t get veto on such issues. But in any production I’d be involved with, I would at least be listened to when I made the suggestion. What would happen after that, the Powers only know.

But it’s nice to think about. He could even play it ginger.  :)

tumblr is going to explode when ben gets there, isn’t it?

i wonder if i have enough insurance coverage.

I’m assuming it blew up already and bounced back.

I caught him arriving and being interviewed by the Sky News entertainment reporter an hour or so ago. He looked cheerful and a bit wired, and was both calmly forthcoming and a touch bashful, which seems to be his modus operandi.

So now we’ll just see how the evening unfolds…

Oh heavens, it’s the BAFTAs tonight

And I’m tenterhooking quite hard….

Martin Freeman already has one: so I feel obliged to root for my countryman in the Best Supporting Actor category. Go Andrew Scott!

And as for Leading Actor, well, the local preference should be obvious.

…Only six hours or so to go, now. We’ll be down at the pub, but will have to stream the BAFTA feed to the laptops anyway due to the neighbors probably wanting to watch the GAA championships or something.

Ah well.

Is there a special group plural (like “murder” for crows) for otters?
Or can we just call this a cumberbunch?

Something Peter just said
Peter (after one too many otter!Sherlock cartoons): Cry "Sherlock!" and let slip the Otters of Detection.

Young Wizards fans: There’s the “Lone Power” face. That expression. Right there.
Oh, dear me. Dear, dear me. I’ve subverted my own headcanon. And my headcanon is canon.
Argh.

What to call the inrush of images of a certain actor today, secondary to his Q&A last night…

…Batchanalia?

Quote Of The Day: (re: Star Trek 2 rumors)

In an email this morning from our old friend Torsten Dewi — media maven, raconteur and man about town — at wortvogel.de:

Subject: So Cumberbatch is playing Khan after all…

… I gotta tell you, I have serious doubt whether he can believably
pull off an arrogant intellectual.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

(another long, long intake of breath)

(collapses)

(pushes self up on elbows again, weakly wagging a finger)

(collapses some more)

…Yes, any day that starts like this is going to be a good one.

It’s not likely to happen, but my God what a concept

I was going through some Tumblr posts and came across this material, which someone had quoted from A Wizard Alone (published in 2002)…

The Lone Power came striding up… looking as Kit had seen It a long time ago—like a young-looking human [male]… handsome, but with cruel, cold eyes and a smile you did not want to see. It was wearing the same dark suit Kit had seen It wear on his own Ordeal, but this time with a long, black winter coat over it, and a scarf wrapped around Its throat.

…and it hit me, way too suddenly: the image of Benedict Cumberbatch cast in a Young Wizards film as the Lone Power.

…I’m going to go off and try to get back to work now.

(Hah, says the back of her brain: good luck with that.)

(…The scarf. I can’t believe I even gave It the scarf….) (helpless laughter)
