People went around wearing black, and one woman wrote a letter to Doyle addressed, “You murderer!”

There is nothing new in fandom.

There sure isn’t. (And indeed all modern-day canons are called so because Sherlock Holmes fandom first coined the term “The Canon” to refer to the Master’s work.)
